Five loaves and two fish to feed over five thousand! How could Jesus expect the disciples to feed that hungry crowd? (John 6)
Jesus saw the crowd and anticipated their hunger, physically and spiritually. He asked Philip, “Where will we get bread for this crowd?” Philip’s response was pretty much, “You must be kidding! Even if we spent all we had, we would not even be able to give everyone more than a crumb! Andrew brings the boy’s lunch but doesn’t see how that will make any difference.
Jesus ignores the “we can’t do it” spirit and tells the disciples to get the crowd to sit down. I wonder what was going on in their minds?… Sit down, and then what? We got nothing!
The disciples assessed the situation correctly from a natural perspective. It was truly an overwhelming need with underwhelming resources from a human point of view.
But what they did not seem to consider was the presence of Jesus! Had they forgotten so quickly? How prone we are to assess our circumstances without seeing Jesus, even in the middle of the most overwhelming circumstances.
Back to the story, Jesus knew what He was about to do in feeding the crowd and teaching His disciples a lesson in His provision.
Spoiler alert! He knows exactly how He will provide for you, and work in you all that you need in your “I’ve got nothing” circumstances.
