Driftwood is remains of trees in whole or part that have been washed into the ocean from flooding or high winds. The EPA states “never burn in your wood burning appliances any driftwood, due to release of toxic chemicals when burned.” Driftwood is mainly ornamental.
Can we become spiritual driftwood, ending up just ornamental?
Some questions:
Do I seldom communicate or listen to God?
Do I invest in “my stuff” and leftovers are God’s?
Is my focus on the eternal or temporal?
Am I too busy to attend to my soul?
Do I feel I am far away from God?
Drifting is slow, subtle and may be unintentional. But the destination is the same. So, we must be intentional! Hebrews 2:1: “We must pay close attention to what we have heard, so that we don’t drift away.”
Am I a fringe dweller, pushing the boundaries? How far can I go and still be okay with God? Answers to these may reveal a heart disease. Drifting always begins in the heart.
Do I follow ALL His word or what tastes good to me? Drifting blinds us to believe WE can be arbiters of what we need. We can’t.
How to avoid becoming driftwood? Confess and repent. Stop drifting. Return to the Father. “If we confess our sins, He will forgive us our sins.” I John 1:9. His mercy is waiting.
Talk to God and listen for His voice. Sometimes He whispers. Put Him first in all things. You can NEVER outgive God.
Diligently seek Him. He will be found. Forge strong friendships with those grounded in Christ. Eat well, devour His love letter, God’s Word. We’re not meant to be driftwood. We are grafted into the Tree of Life, Jesus Christ!
