In a time when there are more avenues than ever to be heard, everyone seems to be screaming, straining for someone to really hear their voice amidst all the chatter. In a parenting training class, I once heard a social worker say, “When a child gets loud, try getting really still and speak quietly.” You know what happens when your response is soft spoken? The child will often silence himself and turn his ear to you in order to hear what you are saying. Peace is often restored.
Proverbs has some good advice. “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1
So, maybe instead of screaming so someone can hear us, we can quiet ourselves. Really listen to the other person and then respond quietly and with discernment.
