Becoming One

Becoming One

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 9:4-6)

According to this scripture, when we marry our spouse, the two of us become one person. It is hard for two different people with two different personalities, cultures, upbringings and unique habits to merge into one house, yet alone into one person. How do we accomplish this?

We must seek first the Kingdom as individuals and then as a couple. We must submit to one another out of reverence to God (Ephesians 5:21). We must crucify our flesh, meaning we must kill or terminate our selfish desires. We must take up our cross and allow our flesh to die so that Christ may live in us. We must decrease and He must increase.

The Christ that inhabits or lives in you, and the Christ that lives in your spouse, is the same Christ. When your flesh is no longer in the way, you can walk in the same spirit – the Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit always agrees with Himself, you are now in agreement with each other. You are now one!
