Meet Lydia

Meet Lydia

Her name appears in Scripture only twice (Acts 16:11-15, 40), yet Lydia’s life leaves a lasting impact. She was known as a worshipper of God.

In just one verse, we read: “The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message” (Acts 16:14). Lydia’s story teaches us the value of faith, generosity, and how using our gifts can glorify God.

Lydia was a successful businesswoman, selling luxurious purple textiles in the village of Thyatira. Upon hearing Paul’s message, her heart was opened, and she was immediately baptized – becoming the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe.

Lydia’s home soon became a gathering place for believers, a testament to her warm hospitality and desire to support the growing church.

Lydia’s story has inspired generations because it:

ENCOURAGES us to use our resources generously to serve the Lord by helping others.
HIGHLIGHTS that we can honor God through our work.
DEMONSTRATES how one person’s commitment to God can reach across generations, blessing countless lives.

Her faith, hospitality, and leadership laid a foundation for the growth of the early church. Lydia’s legacy reminds us that acts of obedience and generosity can have far-reaching, eternal impacts.

Though Scripture doesn’t specifically mention her teaching other women, Lydia’s life reflects influence, generosity, and purpose in the Christian community—powerful lessons for women today.

While purple still symbolizes luxury and honor, I now see it differently as a result of Lydia’s legacy. Purple now also represents honor and glory to the Lord.

May we all be worshippers of God like Lydia.
