Loaves And Fishes

Loaves and Fishes

Jesus demands our all. We are to love the Lord our God with ALL our heart, soul, and mind (Deuteronomy 11:13) . Sounds like a very difficult and humanly impossible task.

Am I the only one who finds herself wanting to hold on to a little bit of the “all”? After all, “all” is well, all!

Let’s look at the story of the feeding of the 5 thousand in John 6:5. Jesus saw that a large crowd had arrived and that they needed food. He asked Philip where they could get bread to feed the crowd. Philip’s response was that even if they spent all they had, it would not be enough to give each person more than a small bite of bread.

But there was a young boy in the crowd who had five loaves and two fish. That young boy was willing to give all the food he had. Imagine a hungry young boy giving up his food.

Did the words Jesus spoke to that crowd fill that child with faith, the child-like faith that Jesus calls us to?

Did that young boy understand, unlike the disciples, that we are called to freely offer what we have – our “loaves and fishes”? Jesus will bless and multiply it according to the need. What a thought to hold on to when we are overwhelmed with not only the enormous need, but our sense of not having and being enough. Ours is to offer what we have been given and believe in God’s abundant provision.

Freely give what has been given to you, and believe He is able to provide “exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think of Him.” Eph 3:20
