Humility Is a Virtue

Humility is a Virtue

Humility refers to the quality of being modest, neither bold nor boastful, showing compassion toward others and standing humbly before the Lord. When we recognize our limitations and weaknesses through humility, we can move toward a greater dependence on God. In the Bible, humility is praised as virtuous, complete with wisdom and grace.

These scriptures emphasize the importance of being humble:
Proverbs 11:2: When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
Matthew 23:12: For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Philippians 2:3-4: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

By practicing humility, we are showing our willingness to learn and grow. We are demonstrating our reliance on God, not on our own abilities or the opinions of the world.

Practice gratitude: Give thanks to the Lord – Psalm 107:1
Stay teachable: Listen for wisdom – Proverbs 19:20
Self-reflection: Examine our ways – Lamentations 3:40

Begin with these practices to reach for more humility in our lives. I invite you to join me in cultivating our humble attitudes before the Lord and each other.
