When I lived in Haiti, mango trees stood tall over the villages, we ate the delicious fruit like an apple or strained the pulp into a pitcher for a refreshing juice. I am in awe of how the Lord uses fruit to quench our thirst and nourish our bodies.
When we are in Christ, we are set apart from unbelievers because of the gift of the Holy Spirit. This spirit lives within, not unlike that mango tree, enabling us to bear fruit. These virtues reflect the character of Jesus and guide believers on a journey to become more Christlike.
The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23, NIV.
These qualities are not just a list of virtues but are seen as proof of the Holy Spirit’s work within a believer’s life. We can develop these virtues, allowing them to shape our character and influence our interactions with others. Here are some practical ways to become more Christlike:
PRAY to develop the fruit of the spirit within you.
READ the Bible to understand these virtues and the examples of Christ’s life.
SURROUND yourself with a community of believers who encourage and support your spiritual growth.
REFLECT on these attributes and how they apply to your life.
SHARE your journey with a trusted friend or mentor who can hold you accountable.
PRACTICE to actively include these virtues in your daily lives.
It requires prayer, self-reflection, and a willingness to grow. It is a life-long process, yet we will persevere. The fruit is delicious!
