How can God’s word be an anchor to our faith, settled in us and ready to apply? Here are five useful practices.
HEARING is only a small part. We can’t grasp God’s Word with only a pinky finger. Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message…”
READING is like eating. Daily intake is necessary. Deuteronomy 17:19 says, “…and he is to read it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to revere the Lord, his God…”
To STUDY is 50% of knowing God’s Word. It’s active! Ask, “Are there examples? A command? A promise? A sin to avoid?”
Notice the verbs in these verses: Proverbs 2:1-6: “…if you ACCEPT my words, STORE UP my commands…TURNING your ear to wisdom, APPLYING your heart to understanding, CALL OUT for insight, CRY ALOUD for understanding, LOOK FOR, SEARCH FOR, UNDERSTAND and FIND the knowledge of God…The Lord gives wisdom, knowledge and understanding.”
To MEMORIZE is hard work. It requires effort and repetition, but it’s worth it! Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
MEDITATION is thinking, reflecting, and pondering with purpose. Joshua 1:8 says, “…meditate day and night, so that you may do everything written in it. Then, you will be prosperous and successful.”
Prosperity and success? Add up all the things in our lives that cannot be purchased with money and that death cannot take away. THAT is our prosperity!
As we Hear, Study, Memorize, and Meditate on God’s eternal truth, we will be equipping ourselves to stand strong against deceptive “winds of doctrine.”
His Word will be alive in us and ready to be activated – ready to bring life!
