Detour Dread

Detour Dread

Detours are alternate routes taken to avoid something. They are not initiated by us, but by someone else who knows the route. Signs are then posted, brightly painted with an arrow that points to the new direction. These signs are usually greeted with groans!

Detour is from the French, meaning “turn aside.” The opposite of detour is direct route. And that’s what we like because detours mean changing the direction of travel. They are inconvenient, unplanned delays.

Detours are primarily for our benefit – avoiding a washed-out bridge, a road closure, a serious accident, or road repairs. Ignoring the clear signs could result in serious consequences.

Life carries detours, as well. The Bible tells us Abraham’s descendants had a 400-year detour in Egypt prior to reaching the promised destination. Paul was detoured on the Damascus road and Moses experienced a 40-year detour in the desert.

Detours in our journeys can cause anxiety unless we see them as God’s protection and guidance. Can we follow His detour, trusting He sees what is ahead? Is there an area of danger? Is a toxic relationship waiting? Will we arrive too soon? Are there obstacles that may cause permanent damage?

God’s detours are not denials – just delays. They are tests of our trust and obedience. Detours build up our faith and strengthen our maturity. The best part of detours? God goes WITH us as He reroutes our plans.

Psalm 32:8: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.”

Proverbs 16:9: “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.”

Rich blessings are found in delays, changes, alternate routes, and EVEN DETOURS!
