Delight in God Continually

Delight in God Continually

How wonderful that we have the opportunity to enjoy our Creator at any moment! We
can taste and see that He is good, even in the midst of tribulations. Westminster
Catechism reasons from Psalm145 that “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy
him forever.” Don’t you love that!

What does it mean, in a practical sense, to enjoy God? And how do we do that when
the weight of the world bears down on us?

My friend Nancy is an urban missionary. She lives among the poor in the inner cities. I
once asked her how she finds God’s peace in such depressing settings. She told me
that she had to TRAIN herself to find God during chaos. He wants to be found
and will always make a way.

When we call to Him, in the darkest moments, determined to always abide in Him, we
will learn to find Him. He will not withhold any good thing, especially Himself. It takes
practice and persistence. He wants us to discover that He is not only completely
sufficient but He is our constant joy.

To me, it seems easiest to connect with God while overlooking majestic scenery. So,
what about those times when we are exhausted and surrounded by hot pavement,
dilapidated buildings, noisy vehicles, angry voices, and revolting stenches? When we
learn how to enjoy Him in such a predicament, we can celebrate Him continuously.

When I read and meditate on Psalm 23, it becomes clear that Jesus will refresh our
souls even in the darkest valley. No formula can teach us to live with our cups
overflowing. We need only to practice His presence and call to Him, especially when He
seems far away.
