Access

My memory summons an iconic photograph from the early sixties when I think about ACCESS. Little John-John Kennedy is just a toddler as he peaks through the small door in front of the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office of the White House. Security protocols involving an audience with POTUS are formidable, even more so now than in that era. Nevertheless, John-John bypassed the whole process of security clearance, never giving it a thought. He had carte blanche access to his dad’s office – no conditions, no qualifications – just because he was the President’s son. He played contentedly at his father’s feet, oblivious to the position or the official work with which his dad was employed.

There is another door through which we can gain access to someone infinitely more important than the United States President. Jesus points out in John 10:9, “I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” He emphasizes there is only one way, and the expense of this security screening process is unparalleled. But, if we go in through the blood of Jesus, leaving the weight of sin behind, we, too, can gain access – to the Living God, Creator of the Universe and King of all Kings.

When we cross that threshold, we are encouraged in Hebrews 4:16 to “come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We can just sit at His feet, enjoying His presence. We become His child, experiencing the protection, help and consistent access to our Father God.
