Did you know there are nearly two hundred songs in the Bible? The first song recorded is the Song of the Sea in Exodus 15, as Moses and the Israelites immediately burst into singing upon their safe journey across the Red Sea. This poem celebrates their freedom after generations of slavery and oppression by the Egyptians.
The opening lines declare their joy and faith:
• I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted.
• The Lord is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation.
• The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is His name.
Also known as Shirat Hayam (Song of the Sea), this passage is one of the oldest in the Hebrew Bible. It celebrates God’s power, faithfulness, and victory over Israel’s enemies.
The Song of the Sea remains a central part of Jewish liturgy, recited in daily morning prayers. It reminds us that worship is a natural response to God’s deliverance. Like the Israelites, we, too, can lift our voices in praise, remembering that God is our strength, salvation, and defender.
How has God rescued you? Take a moment today to sing—or simply speak—a song of gratitude and praise to our Lord (Exodus 15:1-18).
