A Gape at His Love

A Gape At His Love

I had a conversation with my sister about God’s AGAPE love for us. That is the self-giving, unconditional, co-suffering love that comes from the heart of God, given to us freely and abundantly.

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, this was His answer. “The first and great commandment is to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind” (Matthew 22:37).

The second commandment is like it, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (vs 39). We are not just the recipients of this love, but it is to flow out of us as freely as we have received it.

Jesus tells us that on these two commandments, hang ALL the laws and the prophets. Can you grasp that? Everything comes back to the Agape love of God flowing to us, in us, and through us! It is transformational and life-giving.

My sister is searching and open to the voice of God. She texted me a few minutes after we concluded our conversation and said, “Do you realize that a gape is spelled the same as agape? A mouth wide open, especially with surprise or wonder.”

Shouldn’t that be our response as we grow in our knowledge of the grace and love of God? Shouldn’t we all stand in awe, “gaping” at this Agape love?
