Here are just a few important, practical things we can start teaching our kids that cultivate respect and honor:
Say yes ma’am and no sir to adults
Send a hand written thank you note when someone gives you a gift
Initiate conversation with adults
Look people in the eye when you speak to them
Give up your seat to an adult when the room gets crowded
Pick up trash when you see it, whether it’s yours or not
Put your phone down and cease all texting when dining with someone
Hold the door for people
When someone walks into the room, address them
Be a good sport when you lose
Work hard
If you break something that belongs to someone else, offer to repair or replace it
Don’t interrupt or talk over someone while they are speaking
Be on time or early for everything
Thank your parents when they take you out to eat
Always offer to help clean up when you are a dinner guest in someone’s home
Don’t make excuses for bad behavior – own it and own the consequences
Don’t be ashamed when you fail – it’s how you learn some of life’s most valuable lessons
Respect your parents, even when you don’t agree
Say “thank you” when someone does something for you
Take care of and respect the things that have been given to you
