There are myriad ways people learn, but the three of the most popular are: visual (seeing), auditory (hearing) and kinesthetic (touch). We all learn using each of these methods, but sometimes the circumstance makes one method superior to another and engages one our five senses to a greater degree.
A heartbeat (hearing)
The essence of salt (tasting)
A location on a map (seeing)
A bouquet of fresh flowers (smelling)
A hug (touch)
I have a confession. I am a terrible reader! UGH! I am not a visual learner, so when it comes to reading, it’s difficult. I would rather hear the words than read them. I retain more through auditory methods…cds, podcasts, videos, conversations, etc…I often sleep with something playing underneath my pillow.
But, actual reading cannot be omitted, even though it is my greatest struggle. I can read just a few pages and, at the end of it, feel defeated because my retention is so poor.
I remember when I was younger, a leader once questioned me about reading. I told him about how much of the Bible I had recently read, hoping he would be impressed. He then asked me about my level of retention. I dropped my head in defeat. Thankfully, he encouraged me to read for quality rather than quantity. He said I would benefit so much more by gaining an understanding of a few scriptures, rather than chapters, with nothing to show for my efforts.
That really helped me! And, it released me to embrace my weakness and turn it into an advantage! Now, I have learned to employ the strategy of using auditory first, followed by visual as well.
If you struggle learning through a certain method, I pray this will help you study more efficiently without the guilt of failed efforts. There is no shame in the way you learn. Figure out what it is, embrace it and make it a positive!
