The Sabbath

In 0.35 seconds, I learned the word Sabbath is mentioned 172 times in the Bible. There are two main Hebrew words used for rest: Sabbath, which means to stop working and nuakh, which means to dwell or settle.

Genesis 2:3 reminds us: “So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” Further into Genesis, the Bible details God creating humans and resting with them.

From Deuteronomy 5:15: “Therefore, the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.” Command is not a suggestion; it is an order direct from the Lord. These two Hebrew words, sabbath and nuakh give us a concept of rest from working and dwelling with Him. Psalm 23:3 says, “He refreshes my soul.” This command is for our good.

Jesus honors the command from God and turns it into an invitation for us. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). The Lord desires for us to rest in Him, to leave it all for Him to carry for us. Our burdens are light for Him.

The Sabbath is meant for us to enjoy God’s presence, to rest in Him and dwell in his goodness. I will ask the Lord to draw me near so I may find peace in His presence and rest for my soul.
