The Lord, Our Keeper

The Lord, Our Keeper

Many of us have experienced the responsibility of dispersing our parents’ property when they pass away. Sadly, we often find that the items they valued are not “worth keeping” in the eyes of others. Scripture tells us that we are much more valuable than the birds of the air (Proverbs 3: 3-4). Many scriptures emphasize our value to the Lord, which is the reason for God’s sacrifice of His son, Jesus. God looks at His people through His Divine love. He declares that we are worth keeping.

Psalm 121 enumerates the benefits of having God in our lives. Verse 5 says, “The Lord is thy keeper.” Even as dedicated parents, we cannot promise to “keep” our children 24-7. God reminds us, in this Psalm, that His diligence in keeping is superlative in that He never even sleeps.

Independent souls who claim they can look after themselves and all that pertains to them are deluded. God is all-knowing, all-wise, and is aware of our strengths and weaknesses. In addition to being eminently qualified for His Chief Shepherd position, love motivates Him.

How can we cooperate with God’s keeping power? In John 17, Jesus’ hour of glorification, He reminds God that He kept those God gave Him while He was on earth. One way He kept them was to pray for them. As we pray for each other, we cooperate in God’s keeping agenda.

In Revelation 3, Jesus emphasized the importance of keeping His word (the word of My perseverance). The Lord can “keep us from stumbling” and present us blameless before the Lord,” (Jude 1:24). Oh, the scrapes we avoid if we keep His word.

He doesn’t promise to keep us from every adversity, though. He knows what is needed for us to mature. He is our perfect keeper.
