The Counting Game

The Counting Game

Written in the latter part of David’s life, Psalm 103:2 finds him talking to his soul! “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not ALL His benefits.”

This verse reveals that, sometimes, we Do need to speak to ourselves and secondly, that we tend to forget even important things.

The last phrase is a daunting thought. Remember ALL His benefits?

I imagine languidly swinging in a comfortable hammock on a cloudless night with the skyscape littered across the celestial canvas with so many stars that they appear meshed together in a gauzy gossamer canopy.

And then being asked to count them? Unimaginable. Two hundred billion trillion stars?

Remembering God’s benefits is equally staggering. Let’s look at some of His “starry” benefits.

Forgiven: mute before the judge – guilty – no ability to pay the penalty of death that loomed – then the sentence! Our debt paid in full – adjudicated “not guilty” because of the supreme sacrifice of the judge’s own Son.

Isaiah 43:25, “I am He who blots out your transgressions.”

Faithful: God NEVER fails, He NEVER changes or leaves us. Ever! Deuteronomy 7:9, “…the faithful God who keeps His covenant…to a thousand generations.”

Father: I love this “star.” The transcendent God calls Himself our Father. We are adopted into His family. Known by our name, and actually His heirs (Romans 8:17).

Romans 8:15, “…God is our merciful Father.”

Forever: John 10:28, “I gave them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” The glorious life of following Jesus is not just for NOW. We were designed as His “forever” children. We have a purpose in this world and a future in the eternal world. The BEST awaits!

We only counted a few of God’s starry benefits. The adventure is uncovering the vastness of His goodness. Go for it!
