The Company We Keep

The Company We Keep

In Acts 4:13, Jewish leaders heard the powerful words of John and Peter testifying about salvation through God’s Son. Their gospel defenders were unlearned, simple fishermen. Yet, they spoke with deep conviction and boldness. The Chief Priests’ conclusion? “They’ve been with Jesus!”

Now that’s an indictment to which we can all aspire! To be judged by the world, questioned about our faith, mocked because of our beliefs, and then to hear the verdict—“They’ve been with Jesus!” Yes! Guilty! We have been with Him. We follow His will.

What an extraordinary opportunity we have to represent our Lord Jesus. What is the “evidence” we can present?

First, we can discard baby pablum and grow up. That means self-control in stressful times and rejecting offenses. It means honoring commitments and serving, rather than being served.
I Corinthians 3:1-3.

The way we speak is either life or death. Quiet confidence and respect reflect God’s character. Proverbs 18:21.

We can choose kindness when circumstances scream harshness. Micah 6:8.

A smile, silent and sincere, may defuse the emotions of rejection. Proverbs 15:13.

Compassion to the undeserving is a powerful tool. It bathes the wounds and promotes healing.
I Peter 3:8.

Forgiveness is the purest reflection of Jesus’ work of grace in us. Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness is antithetical to our culture’s commentary on a daily basis. Accusations, irresponsibility, and criticisms flow without restraint. Biblical forgiveness is unexpected and unleashes the lovely fragrance of Jesus.

We can usher peace into chaos. He is the Prince of Peace. Romans 14:19.

When reviled, we can emulate our Master’s response and not open our mouths. Matthew 5:44.

We can let gossip stop with us! Proverbs 26:20.

We can allow the pristine character of Jesus to clothe us and plead guilty to the charge, “You’ve been with Jesus.”
