The word “BALANCE” is sometimes disparaged in Christian circles. Critics equate it with “compromise.” Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.” Think of the cross as the “balance beam” of Olympic glory – working for a ten.
Jesus’ way is described as a “narrow path,” according to Matthew 7:14. It is often easy to step off to one side, slightly off-tilt, out of balance. Here are a few examples:
GOD’S ABUNDANCE: There is a tension where our needs are supplied and good works He ordains are funded; or, amassing great riches for material goods that we are proud of, love, and trust.
FAITH VS. EXPERIENCE: We can base our faith in God’s word or easily fall back on hard experiences that have disappointed and hurt us. Think of beginning a new relationship after a crushing divorce in which you were betrayed. Has your faith been affected?
THE WAY WE USE THE WRITTEN WORD: We can value the word of God, but weaponize it to win an argument or throw out a quick verse without listening to the heart. A balance in timing and hearing the Holy Spirit’s direction can make all the difference.
FAITH VS. WORKS: According to Hebrews 4:11, we should LABOUR to enter His REST. When
should we “do” and when should we “rest” in Him as we wait for prayer answers?
Scripture and relationship with God cannot be reduced to a formula. Knowing the whole tenor of scripture and renewing our minds helps us see facets of several verses about the same subject, bringing clarity. We depend on the Holy Spirit to give us a word of counsel or direction. In “season,” with His timing, is a “balance bringer.” Ask for His help. We need it!
