Over My Head

Over My Head

Ever been in over your head? By circumstances? Finances? Relationships? It can happen to anyone.

I used to believe if a bad situation wasn’t my fault, God would help me. But if I messed up, I was on my own. Wrong!

One weekend, we were ministering and were invited to swim by the host couple. We took advantage and felt the warm relaxation of the water. Eventually, most of our group left. I remained in the pool with the host, his wife, and a dear friend, Terry. He could not swim.

I foolishly assumed I could instruct him the way I taught my children to swim. We inched our way along, holding the side of the pool. Everything was copacetic.

The split second we stepped into water over our heads, he grabbed my arm in a death grip, and under the surface we went. I struggled, kicked, and thrashed with no chance of surfacing. He was too strong. I knew we were going to drown.

The next moment, someone came underneath me and lifted both of us to the surface, gasping, spitting, coughing, and crying. Leaving, the host glanced back and instantly recognized what was happening. He had raced back and dove into the water.

He explained that coming UNDER a drowning victim keeps them from fighting off, in their panic, the very one who can save them. That’s what Jesus, our Savior, has done. He rescued us! He has LIFTED us from death to life – from despair to hope – from slavery to freedom.

Psalm 30:2: “O, Lord, you have lifted me up. I cried out to You, and You healed me…”

No matter the reason, there is no place where His arms cannot rescue, and no place so deep that He is not deeper still.
