Several years ago, I found myself at the Grand Canyon, watching eagles fly from their high perches. It was breathtaking to watch the ease and grace with which they took to the sky. I was reminded of this when I heard someone describe an eagle “mounting up”. When an eagle mounts up, it goes to a high place. This is where it can catch the air currents that will allow it to stay aloft.
What amazed me was not just the grace and magnificence of their flight, but the incredible ease with which they soared. Very little energy was expended in their flight. The breadth of their wingspan allowed them to rely on the wind to keep them in the air.
Isaiah 40:31 says, “But those who wait on the Lord, will renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint…”
So, how do we as humans mount up with wings like eagles? I believe that the answer is found in Ephesians 2:6, “And He has raised us up TOGETHER and made us sit TOGETHER in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” This is our “mounting up” place, in the heavens with Christ Jesus! As we spread our wings of faith, the wind of the Holy Spirit lifts us, supports, and directs us. If we are weary or fainting, perhaps we are striving from where we are in our humanness, not relying on Him. If we see a brother or sister earthbound by the cares of this world, let’s join with them as we encourage one another in claiming our high place with Christ TOGETHER.
