Net Worth

When a movie star dies, we often see published reports of their Net Worth. I admit to falling for this click bait out of curiosity, as if it serves as a final summation of the value of that person’s life.

We are also intrigued when we see the ongoing jockeying of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet, and others as to who among them is the richest in the world. They are defined by that answer.

On a different, but related, topic, I became interested in what was important to the dying when I worked with volunteers at a local hospice. Cicily Saunders, the Christian founder of the hospice concept of end-of-life care, concluded that spiritual care was a critical part of meeting basic needs of patients. Most people at end of life seem to recognize, maybe for the first time, their spiritual need. They respond in various ways to that need, but we all want to feel our lives have worth and value, unrelated to material assets.

I like how God shows us in His Word what our net (assets minus liabilities) worth truly is:
He knitted us in our mother’s womb – fearfully and wonderfully.
He died for us in the Divine exchange of his goodness for our sin.
He rejoices over us.
He provides for us.
He supplies peace and joy.
He calls us His children.
He never leaves us.
He prepares a place for us in heaven.

Even though He is aware of our liabilities, He loves and accepts us anyway. He even strengthens us in our weakness. Proverbs 10:22 says “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.”

He paid the highest possible price to redeem us. We are of infinite worth to Him.
