D'Vorah - A Bee

D’Vorah (דבורה): A Bee

It is estimated that around 188 women are mentioned in the Bible, compared to approximately 3,000 named men. These women were matriarchs, leaders, prophets, queens, caregivers, and poets. They were ordinary women, whose lives tell stories in the Bible of faith, courage, compassion, and strength.

Deborah (Hebrew origin that means “bee”) was called upon by God for her role in the military victory over the Canaanites. She was the only woman among the twelve judges in the Old Testament. Deborah’s story was told in the Book of Judges, chapters 4 and 5.

Deborah particularly inspires me as a courageous leader, wise judge, and faithful servant of God. I love the symbolism that she held court under a palm tree where she settled arguments and shared her wisdom with the people. The palm tree, rich in meaning, represents victory, resilience, peace, abundance, and spiritual growth.

We read in Judges that Deborah instructed Barak to gather an army to confront the Canaanite General Sisera. Barak hesitated (Judges 4:8) but she assured him of God’s victory. Under Deborah’s leadership, the Israelites defeated the Canaanites, and Jael killed Sisera (Judges 4:21). Sisera fell into the hands of a woman just as God had promised.

We know with certainty that God can use anyone, regardless of gender, to accomplish His purposes. Deborah’s character and actions represent courage, faith, and the power of obedience to God. She demonstrates complete trust and faith, listening intently for the Lord’s direction and promise of victory.

We may not be called to defeat an army of Canaanites or pierce a stake in a commander’s temple: however, if we sit under our palm tree and watch for the bees, we can trust that God will give us victory (Judges 4:14).
