I am currently studying the book of Daniel. It is so rich! I got stuck in this incredible story in Chapter 2 for several days. I just kept reading the story over and over again – each time gleaning something new; something fresh.
In Daniel Chapter 2, King Nebuchadnezzar had a disturbing dream that troubled his soul. He called for his staff of magicians, enchanters and sorcerers – all known for their expertise in magic and dream interpretation. He demanded that they interpret his dream so he could know its meaning. He had one caveat for his staff – they must not only give the interpretation, but they must also give the dream itself. His staff said, “this is an impossible task” and asked over and over again for him to reveal the dream and let them interpret it. He refused. He knew that the only pure and undefiled interpretation would come through a supernatural source and that the supernatural source that revealed the interpretation was also capable of revealing the dream itself. The magicians, enchanters and sorcerers sent word to the King: “The thing that the King asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the King except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” They had given up. Not one of them could meet the King’s demands.
Nebuchadnezzar, furious, ordered that all the wise men in Babylon be executed. This included Daniel and his three companions, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. When Daniel heard the news, he asked his three friends to pray that God would have mercy on them and that He would reveal the dream and its meaning to him.
God answered Daniel with a vision in the night, imparting all to him. Daniel was brought before Nebuchadnezzar and proceeded to tell the King the entire dream in detail and its powerful interpretation. In Daniel’s speech to the King, a certain phrase just jumped off the page at me. He said, “No wise men, enchanters, magicians or astrologers can show to the King the mystery that the King has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries…”
Wow! Did you catch that? “There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries”. This phrase took my breath away as I read it! The magicians and sorcerers had admitted to the King that the only ones who could accomplish the task that he asked of them were gods “whose dwelling is not with flesh.” In contrast, Daniel boldly said to the King, “I know these things because there is a living, breathing God in heaven who dwells among flesh and reveals great mysteries!!”
We serve that God – Daniel’s God – the all-knowing, all-powerful God who lives inside us and reveals great mysteries to us through His Holy Spirit. We serve the God who loves the impossible, the God who thrives on the unexplainable, the God who is never intimidated by our circumstances and who delights in revealing “secrets” and “hidden” things. He never hides revelation from us; only for us.
Is there a mystery in your life? Something that just needs an answer? Is there a situation that just seems to have no resolution? When faced with something that seems impossible to sort out, solve, understand or explain, remember that Daniel’s God is your God and He is the God who reveals mysteries. Like Daniel, we must do two things. First, we must simply ask Him to divulge it. Secondly, we must give Him alone the glory for the answer!
