The other day I was indulging in a little pity party of regrets over how we had raised our children. My wonderful husband, who will not join any of my pity parties, shared a scripture with me that changed my whole mind set. II Corinthians 7:10-11 speaks of Godly sorrow and worldly sorrow. “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves NO regrets. But, worldly sorrow brings death.” God’s ways are so much higher than our ways. How does one repent without having regrets? I believe regrets cause us to regress into the past which is a hopeless place because we are helpless to change anything about our past. Repentance points us to the hope of a present and future free from the past. Verse 11 speaks of what godly sorrow produces, “see what Godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done.”
Now, this made me stop in my pity tracks and realize that I could clear myself before God, rise up and fight for my children. I became indignant and ready to see justice done! This place of spiritual power comes from the humility of repentance. The enemy trembles at this truth and it thwarts his plans for us to regress into humiliation and regrets. The simple truth is that if we are regretting we are not repenting….and their is no regretting in repenting.
