Nothing Can Change?

I was recently reading Daniel Chapter 6 where Daniel was thrown into the lion’s den and I came across a part of the story that had apparently always evaded me. It is verse 17, “and a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den, and the King sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of the lords, that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.” Daniel’s fate was literally sealed with the signet of King Darius and his lords. “Nothing might be changed.”

That phrase immediately took me back to August 23, 2012. That is the day that our 14 year old daughter, Kinsey (after her 5th open heart surgery) went to the operating room for a routine bronchoscopy and came out on ECMO (an advanced form of life support) due to a terrible accident during surgery.

Doctors told us she had been without oxygen to her brain for over 20 minutes, requiring CPR that entire time. She was on ECMO and there was no pupil dilation. Their words to us were, “Go home. Let us do our job. Get some rest. Nothing can change tonight.”

Just like in Daniel’s story, those words were like the signet on the stone that had rolled over her situation. “Nothing can change…”

The waiting room was full of Holy Spirit filled believers speaking God’s word over Kinsey’s situation – over her very life and then….something happened!

In Daniel’s story, King Darius (after an entire night) returned to the stone that had sealed Daniel’s fate, ordered for it to be removed and found Daniel – alive and unharmed! Death had been defeated!

For Kinsey, the doctors returned to her bedside, shined the flashlight in her eyes one more time and saw dilation! Proof of life!! “Nothing can change”…but it did!! Three days later, she was off ECMO! Death – defeated!

Praise the living God who restores life, crushing death with His great Power!
