“You’re ALWAYS late!” “EVERYONE is doing that!” It’s best not to use absolutes in our relationships because…well…they’re just inaccurate. Our teens aren’t ALWAYS late, and not EVERYONE is doing that. Absolutes put us in a place where growth is difficult.
But in the most important areas of our lives, ABSOLUTES are essential. They are like a secure blanket, a bedroom that does not move. Spiritually, the risk of relativism is real. We need an immovable plumb line and an indestructible measuring standard. God and His Word are free of limitations—perfect, complete, and immutable.
To discern if “truth” is crooked, it must be measured by God’s straight line: “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life”( John 14:6I). I love God’s absolutes! They leave no wiggle room.
Some of my favorites:
“The steadfast love of the Lord NEVER ceases; His mercies NEVER come to an end” (Lamentations 3:22).
We need His mercies daily. How wonderful that there is an endless supply!
“Now thanks be unto God, who ALWAYS causes us to triumph in Christ…” (2 Corinthians 2:14).
This victory may be quite different than first envisioned. The triumph may be forgiving someone, repenting, or sacrificing ourselves. But it’s ALWAYS a triumph!
“…for I am God, and there is NO ONE else; I am God, and there is NO ONE like me” (Isaiah 46:9).
He is first, last, and everything in between. No flirting with sin, no compromising my behavior, no opening my affections to distractions.
“ALL things work together for good to those who love God…” (Romans 8:28).
“Things” rarely work together. The actual subject of the verse is God. HE works ALL these “things” in our lives to advance His will in us.
God’s ABSOLUTES are a divine resting place for us—ALWAYS and FOREVER.
