The Best Part

The Best Part

“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed, Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her’ ” (Luke 10:41 & 42).

Can we apply these words of Jesus to our lives today? It seems like the world has gone absolutely crazy. Anger, hatred, and violence have become the norm. There are so many things to be worried and troubled about; one look at the news will tell you that.

Then, there are the deeply personal things that trouble us. We each have our own story of the circumstances and people that cause us distress, which may even leave us wondering if He cares. I am reminded of Peter and the disciples in a boat during a terrible storm. Peter concludes they will die in the storm and feels that Jesus doesn’t care. Martha is busy trying to prepare a meal, and Jesus isn’t at all upset with Mary sitting at his feet, not tending to the “storm” happening in the kitchen!

Whatever our circumstances, whatever may be “taken away from us,” the worship and adoration we give to Him will never be taken away. We will have chosen the best part.

No matter where you find yourself, Jesus is there, reminding and encouraging you to sit at His feet. You can choose the best part in whatever circumstances and storms you encounter. Lord, help us always to choose the best part: trusting you and giving thanks. That will never be taken away.
