Anxious Thoughts

Anxious Thoughts

The last verse of Psalm 139 is “…try me and know my thoughts and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.”

David ends his psalm asking God to “search me, know me, try me” – quite a serious prayer.

The thoughts David mentions are “anxious” thoughts – thoughts that worry and stir apprehension. We’ve all probably experienced anxiety, and it usually begins with thoughts.

Recently, I lay awake for over two hours mulling over an unforeseen situation. I felt uneasy, anxious, and I had no answer. Anxiety is nebulous – uncertainty wrapped in a dark cloud.

David wanted his anxious or offensive thoughts to be brought to the surface. Why? So, he could acknowledge them, repent from his lack of trust in God, and be free of their grip.

Anxious thoughts are not God’s desire for us. They cause a troubled spirit, disturbed peace, and, if unchecked, a disquieted life. They become a daily weight.

Could it be we are too focused on ourselves?

Jesus said in Matthew 6:25, “Do not be anxious about your life…” Seek His Kingdom FIRST, and He promises to tend to the rest. ALL of it!

Perhaps we are struggling with believing God and His plans in our lives. Unbelief was experienced by a man in Mark 9:24, whose son had a demon. He was very honest and declared, “Lord, I believe, help my unbelief.”

Anxiety is a potent tool of our enemy. We don’t have to be a casualty.

We can, by faith and our will, actively trust that God has ALL our days in His hands. We can believe what HE promises with no distressing, worrying thoughts.

My two-hour sleepless night of anxiety? It was resolved by 8 am the next morning. Lesson learned!
