Change

A LOUD thought crashed through my consciousness to awaken me, “Change holds things together.” “Okay,” I intellectualized, “that must be true on a molecular level,” thinking God was conferring some lofty revelation to me. But, since my knowledge of physics ends with the inclined plane, I didn’t know what to do with that phrase. It became an earworm of sorts, whispering back to me.

I have learned to pay attention to a thought that stays present, wondering if it was a God communication on a more practical level. Like Samuel thinking Eli was calling him, it usually takes more than a minute for me to figure it out. It occurred to me that our Pastor’s wife had taught on change one Sunday earlier this year. Finding the podcast in the sermon archives, I listened again to “Nothing Can Change”. She skillfully interweaves the story of Daniel and the lion’s den with her own poignant story of her daughter’s miraculous recovery in 2012 from severe complications after her fifth heart surgery. They were told, based on facts and statistics, “nothing can change.” Her point – the enemy will loudly say (through our current culture, our experience, and even medical facts) that nothing will change and there is no hope.

Our God (who the Bible says never changes because He is perfect) is constantly CHANGING US and our circumstances for His glory and our good – often in response to prayer. A friend reminded me of three scriptural phrases: glory to glory, faith to faith, and strength to strength. These are transitional statements of onward and upward progress he is working into our lives.

God’s change is the glue that catalyzes forgiveness, understanding, and increased wisdom and faith in our God. Change holds things together. Through God, things can change!
