Fear Can Be a Good Thing

Although we are encouraged in Scripture to trust the Lord and not live in a fearful manner, there is a type of fear we should cultivate. Let us look at the FEAR OF THE LORD, which is a gateway to God’s blessing. This fear has the connotation of reverence and awe but also an understanding that disobedience has serious negative consequences.

The fear of the Lord:

Adds to our longevity: (Proverbs 10:27) The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.
Brings God’s approval: (Proverbs 31:30) Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Brings provision: (Proverbs 22:4) The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.
Brings friendship with God: (Psalm 25:14) The friendship for the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them His covenant.
Brings wisdom: (Proverbs 9:10) The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Brings revelation: (Psalm 34:11) Come, oh children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

There are many other verses describing the benefits of fearing the Lord. These verses have encouraged me to pray that God would teach me more in this area. So many times, our prayers are in response to emergencies or negative life experiences. I feel that this prayer can sometimes circumvent the plans of the enemy and bring an added measure of God’s blessing to our lives.
