He Gets Me-22

He ‘Gets’ Me

On our way to the car after shopping in two department stores, my husband said, “I saw something in the first store you would like. It’s slinky.” I gave him a sidelong glance. Anyone who knows me can testify I don’t go in for “slinky.” Since this is our fiftieth year of marriage, I was puzzled. I said, “I already found something nice there (we had shopped separately in the store.)” My curiosity prevailed and when he suggested we return and look, I agreed.

When we found the item, lo and behold, it was a duplicate of the sweater I had just purchased, even the same color. We laughed and I said, “Oh, you meant s-t-r-e-t-c-h-y, not slinky.” “Yea, stretchy,” said the man with a limited female fashion vocabulary. I smiled and thought, “he ‘gets’ me.”

That funny incident started me thinking about my relationship with the Lord. In my almost fifty years’ walk with Him, would I be as honed into His personality? He’s still a mystery to me in many ways. In Isaiah 55:8, God declares, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…”

On the other hand, he admonishes us in 2 Peter 3:18 to “grow in the …knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” I concluded the secret is in the process. We can’t immediately know Him when we are born again. Our part is presenting ourselves to Him through exposure to His Word, good teaching, and fellowship. Our vocabulary about Him falls short of describing who He really is, but we can increase in our knowledge of him day by day. To say He is well worth knowing is the understatement of eternity. The cherry on top: He “gets” us – totally!
