Intolerance. We hear that word a lot today. There’s gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance and many more. Symptoms are varied and only abate as the offending food is eliminated.
There is also much discourse about cultural intolerance. If you happen to differ on some topics, you are automatically labeled an intolerant bigot!
Well…I’ve decided to embrace the word intolerant! Let me explain. I began thinking of what God says NOT to tolerate. I’m agreeing with Him and making some guidelines for myself:
I am GOSSIP INTOLERANT. I won’t hear it or repeat it. Even if it’s true. (Proverbs 11:13)
I am STUBBORN INTOLERANT. I will have no hissy fits if things don’t go my way. I will obey God’s Word. Period. (Proverbs 29:1)
I am COMPLAINING INTOLERANT. I will praise my God in all circumstances. My lips will be full of gratitude. (Colossians 4:2)
I am SIN INTOLERANT. I will run from it, so it will not touch my life and stain my witness. (Matthew 26:41)
I am CARELESS INTOLERANT. I will keep my commitments. I will nurture my spirit and not let it “slide.” It will be my priority. (Proverbs 19:16)
I am SELFISH INTOLERANT. I will generously give to eternal things. My resources will be invested joyfully to advance His Kingdom. (Hebrews 13:16)
I am DECEPTION INTOLERANT. The values of this world system are anathema to me. I will follow only the yardstick of God’s Word. I will be deaf to deceiving lies. (Colossians 2:8)
There are many more and the truth is, EVERYONE is intolerant. It just depends on where your toleration line is.
I’m grateful God has drawn a bright, clear line for us. Beyond His kind of intolerance, there are no ill effects – only FREEDOM!
