James 3:13-16 (ESV):
“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”
Jealousy and selfish ambition or “rivalry” are no joke! James describes this behavior as “earthly, unspiritual, demonic” – earthbound, not Kingdom. The scripture goes on to say in verse 17:
“But the kingdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”
Wisdom is a great thing to possess, but it can also make our flesh prideful, condescending, unloving and contentious. It’s so important that we not get “puffed up” in our knowledge. When wisdom truly “comes from above,” the motivation behind sharing it comes from the Father. It will be delivered peacefully, confidently, boldly and with mercy. Verse 18 tells us what the results will be:
“And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
The legacy of those who bring peace instead of conflict is “a harvest of righteousness.” Good fruit is not produced by man’s anger and it will never bear anything productive in us or others. But, God will bless kingdom conduct rooted in wisdom, and its fruit will bless others!
