I remember the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that occurred the day after Christmas in 2004. 100-foot waves consumed the Indian Ocean coastline. The tsunami killed 227,898 people and devastated 14 countries. The total energy of the waves was equal to about five megatons of TNT – more than twice the total explosive energy used during all of World War II! The images of its wrath and the aftermath are unforgettable.
That’s a picture of devastating loss. Many of us have experienced it. It comes out of nowhere, crashes onto the shore of our lives with the force of a tsunami – wrecking, ravaging, decimating everything in its path. It pushes way past acceptable borders and, just like the tsunami victims, we are left with the effects of its fury and the aftermath.
If you can relate; you know.
If you can’t; I’m so glad.
Here’s what I know. Loss does not have the final say. “God is close to the broken hearted and SAVES those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18). He repairs, restores, rebuilds what loss tries to claim and He redeems it for His glory and for eternity’s purposes. Somehow. In time. He does.
If you’ve ever experienced this, you know.
If you’re still waiting, hold on.
“May my cry come before you, Lord; give me understanding according to your word.
May my supplication come before you; deliver me according to your promise.
May my lips overflow with praise, for you teach me your decrees.
May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous.
May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.
I long for your salvation, Lord, and your law gives me delight.
Let me live that I may praise you…”
(Psalm 119:169-175)
