Leaning Back

Leaning Back

I was reading John 13 today where, during the Last Supper with his disciples, Jesus predicted his betrayal. I recently heard this passage used in a teaching and it spoke deeply to me. Jesus announced to his disciples that one of them would betray him. They were perplexed and did not understand what he meant. Simon Peter motioned to John as if to say, “Ask him what he means!’ John 13:25 says this:

“LEANING BACK AGAINST JESUS, (John) asked him, “Lord, who is it?” And, Jesus gave him the answer.

Jesus told the closest one to Him the secret! John leaned back into Jesus – close to his chest (his heart) and asked for clarification and Jesus gave it to him. The disciples represented Jesus’s inner circle. He chose to pour Himself out to twelve men, yet one pressed in for the most intimate knowledge – the secret. He “reclined next to Jesus” – He made the effort to be in close proximity to his Master. This exchange solidified what Jesus had spoken over his disciples in Matthew 13, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of Heaven…”

As a disciple and follower of Christ, I want to live like this. I want to be close to His heart. I want to be in close proximity to His voice at all times. I want to boldly ask questions that cause Him to reveal the secrets of Heaven and His Kingdom to me!
