Call Me Higher

Call Me Higher

My husband said this recently and it really impacted me. “I believe the reason people resist God is that they think He is calling them out when He is really calling them up.” The Word says that God “chastens the ones He loves.” Chastens means disciplines or corrects. When God’s correction comes, people often resist it because they don’t understand that His motivation is only EVER love. When people correct us, it too can be motivated by love, but it can also be motivated by other things – control, fear, pride, etc… We don’t ever have to worry about the motivation behind God’s correction. It will always be born out of His great love for us. There is no need to resist Him when we feel we have fallen short or have failed altogether. We have to understand that God is lovingly showing us an area of our life that needs to come higher. He has to offend us where we are so we will move to where He wants us to be. If we get too comfortable in a certain thing, we will camp out and settle there, becoming apathetic and content. God is saying, “There’s more! It’s better than this! I’ve got more for you if I can just get you to think higher.” I want God to call me higher! He’s not calling me OUT to shame me or to overwhelm me with my failures. He’s calling me UP to things greater than I can imagine – the greatness of who Christ is perfected in me!
