Awesome Lives Up To Its Name

Awesome Lives Up To Its Name

My family knows one of my silly groans is the overuse of the word “awesome”. The word is used to describe most anything, as in, “This pizza is awesome!” – Uh, no, probably not.

Awesome means jaw dropping, breathtaking, staggering. I’ve tasted a lot of yummy pizzas in my life, but none left me with my jaw on the ground, or my breath snatched away or my body staggering from the experience.

Pizza may be tasty, delicious, mouthwatering or really good, but “awesome” it is not.

You know what is? Psalm 139:6. “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. I cannot grasp it. I can hardly endure to think of it. The theme overwhelms me. I am amazed and astounded at it. Such knowledge not only surpasses my comprehension, but even my imagination.”

What’s David talking about? What knowledge? The knowledge that God PERFECTLY knows each of us. The preceding five verses encompass this truth. ALL OF GOD is in every place, every part of my life.

One translation says it this way, “This is too glorious, too wonderful to believe.”

This incredible truth that God knows me intimately – that He is interested in me personally – that NOTHING escapes His searching eyes is, as David wrote, beyond belief. This truth fills us with wonder and we marvel.

David was taking it all in:
Verse 1: He searches my heart and life…Because He LOVES me.
Verse 2: He knows all my movements, like a prized child…Because He LOVES me.
Verse 3: He personally maps my life – all of it – just for me…Because He LOVES me.
Verse 3: He hems me in – close to His heart – every moment He knows where I am…Because He LOVES me.
Verse 4: He knows the words in my spirit and wants to fill my spirit with HIMSELF…Because He LOVES me.
Verse 5: He goes ahead to my future, protects my present and His goodness and mercy follow me…Because He LOVES me.

David was overwhelmed by this. He was staggered. I am, as well. Now THAT is AWESOME!
