Have you ever been to the top of a very tall building like the World Trade Towers? I remember looking down on all the people that looked like ants. What about being in an airplane, so far above the earth, that you cannot even see houses or buildings? That sky scraper that made people look like ants, cannot even be seen for all its boast of being the world’s tallest building. Ephesians 2:6 tells us that we are seated with Him in the heavenly realm. Now, that starts to put things in perspective. From that vantage point, the whole earth would be but a speck in the universe.
If we were to wake up every morning with the realization that we are indeed seated with Him in the heavenly realm, far above all the “stuff” in our lives that seems so big, how different would our Christian walk be? All this week I have been drawn to the prayer that Jesus prayed over His disciples and us. This morning I struck gold! Jesus prays, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:24
Jesus prays that we will be with Him where He is. And where is that? Jesus was about to be arrested, belittled, betrayed, beaten, and crucified. Was this a place of glory? Jesus finds Himself pleading, with sweat as drops of blood, to His Father for this cup of suffering to pass over Him. I believe that the place where Jesus was, the place that His glory resides, was with His Father in the heavenly realms. From that vantage point, from that place, Jesus received the abundance of grace that allowed Him to triumph over the indescribable agony that He was to suffer for those He had just prayed for.
What if in the midst of our trials and tribulations, we found ourselves far above the principalities and powers of this earth? What if we could walk through our present distress looking down from our place of grace? Jesus is our example, and He left this as an example to follow. We are spiritual beings living a transient, earthly existence. We are not earthly beings hoping, striving for a spiritual existence in eternity. I have a strong feeling that when we as believers see things from Christ’s vantage point, we receive an abundance of grace to be more then conquerors. It is there that the things of this earth grow strangely dim.
